MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. / SONGS: OHIA news

lost shohola record to be found on "fading trails" (6/07/06)
coming september 12th on secretly canadian is yet another new magnolia release entitled "fading trails". it'll be composed of various recent recording sessions jason molina and company (both familiar and new) did with steve albini, david lowery and at the famous sun studios in memphis, tennessee... most intriguing of all, it will also feature the demos from the lost shohola album.

let me go on vinyl (5/16/06)
a few more details about the new jason molina solo album "let me go, let me go, let me go" due out august 22nd on secretly canadian. it will be released lp-only in the same fashion as the previous solo album "pyramid electric co.", with all that statement entails (*wink*)... a short piece from jason describing the album is also online...

let me go almost ready to go (4/29/06)
the master for the new jason molina solo album, "let me go, let me go, let me go" was approved earlier this week and secretly canadian is currently aiming for a july 2006 release date.

jason molina solo radio set (4/24/06)
when magnolia electric co. passed through chapel hill last month, jason swung by and recorded acoustic versions of three brand new songs for the internet radio site no love for ned (who happens to also host songsohia.com)... it just went up as part of the four-year anniversary show (04-24-06) and jason's set starts the second hour. the setlist: new devil / memphis / good luck follows bad follows none

"nashville moon" on the horizon (3/31/06)
no release date has been set, but a tracklist is now available for the upcoming magnolia electric co. album "nashville moon" recorded by steve albini. featuring twelve tracks and clocking in at about 45 minutes, it looks something like this: lonesome valley / montgomery bound / don't fade on me / hammer down / no moon on the water / nashville moon / what comes after the blues / north star / don't this look like the dark / bowery / texas 71 / down the wrong road both ways

magnolia electric co. records at sun studios (3/31/06)
on a day off in memphis last month, magnolia electric co. stopped by the legendary sun studios to record a trio of new tracks and a new version of "hold on magnolia"... it could potentially become an ep (with a magnolia'd sun-style label) but there are no firm plans at the moment. it was just the five-piece touring band for the session - jason molina (guitar, vox), jason groth (guitar, backing vox), michael kapinus (keys, trumpet), pete schreiner (bass) and mark rice (drums)...

end of tour updates (3/31/06)
so the new molina solo album didn't quite make it to the band in time for the tour... it should hopefully be available from secretly canadian later this spring. the summer tour is coming together and there should be another eastern u.s. tour in the fall... i even heard a rumor of a solo show pencilled in for new zealand, although there aren't any firm plans yet.

one more molina solo date and summer tour plans (3/01/06)
just got notice of a solo london show on april 5th, details on the tour page... the tour page also has the potential routing for a west coast tour this summer.

one molina solo date in spain (2/14/06)
jason molina will play a solo set on april 8th in sevilla, spain as part of the southpop festival. this is a one-off show and not part of a larger tour (as far as i know!).

a few more molina and lowery details... (2/11/06)
no word on a release date, but the album recorded this past fall in virginia with david lowery is expected to come out under the magnolia electric co. moniker with a tentative title of "the black ram"... despite bearing the mec name, the album features all guest musicians (details to come!).

chicago reader article reveals more album details (1/14/06)
the chicago reader revealed some more details about upcoming releases in an article yesterday. a new solo album, tentatively titled "let me go", should be released first. recorded last february in indiana, it returns to the sparse piano/guitar arrangements of "pyramid electric co.". the new magnolia electric co. lp "nashville moon" is also complete, save for mixing. it was recorded last july with steve albini at electrical audio. the article also mentioned that jason will return to virginia to finish the collaboration with david lowery in february.

molina mondays at schuba's this february (11/22/05)
according to the mec myspace page, jason molina will be curating monday night shows at schuba's (in chicago) this coming february. he'll play a solo set and also pick other bands and songwriters to fill out the slots!

art show and hints at upcoming projects (11/16/05)
pitchfork had a news update today about the art show jason molina will be taking part in at brooklyn's fire proof press (NOTE: he will no longer be performing). buried at the bottom was news about upcoming collaborations indicating that he had finished work on a full length with david lowery of camper van beethoven and cracker and he's hoping to put together a colloborative project with chicago musicians (his wishlist includes sally timms of the mekons, jeff tweedy of wilco, and danny black of the blacks).

magnolia on myspace (10/11/05)
many might know that magnolia electric co. has had a myspace page for a month or two now... but as of today there are three tracks from the new ep available to stream there, for those who haven't already hopped on that (ps - it's in your local record store as of today)...

hurricanes cancel three shows this weekend (9/22/05)
the impending hurricane rita has led to the cancellation of all remaining texas dates (that'd be mcallen and houston)... the new orleans show on sunday was cancelled awhile back due to hurricane katrina...

hard to love a man ep available at shows (8/16/05)
well whadayaknow! it'd seem that the upcoming ep (due out october 11th) is already in the hands of the band and can be procured from them at any of the shows over the next month or so... as a reminder, it features three non-album tracks recorded in april and a cover of warren zevon's "werewolves of london" recorded in fall 2003.

hard to love a man ep coming in october (7/20/05)
the summer release date might have been a bit ambitious, but details are now out for the "hard to love a man" ep... secretly canadian has it scheduled for an october 11th release (cd only, no 10" was mentioned)... four original tracks (most of them previewed over the past three months of touring) and their cover of warren zevon's "werewolves of london" that you might remember from the tour two years ago...

new magnolia electric co. ep coming in july (4/19/05)
before heading out on tour earlier this month, magnolia electric co. stopped by echo park studios in bloomington to record a new ep. right now it looks like it'll be released by secretly canadian on cd and 10" in july, just in time for them to head out on the road for more north american dates...

more magnolia electric co. north american tour dates (4/08/05)
the huge tour in support of "what comes after the blues" begins tonight and if the three months worth of tour dates aren't enough for you, you're in luck. magnolia electric co. will return to the road in early august, after a short respite from their european tour (and a one-off show in chicago in july to play the intonation festival on the 16th or 17th). a rather extensive canadian tour followed by u.s. dates will keep them on the road until october.

more vinyl reissues coming this summer (3/15/05)
after the successful reissue campaign for the first three (secretly canadian released) songs: ohia full lengths in fall '04, summer '05 will bring us the following three full-lengths. july 5th brings the vinyl re-releases of "ghost tropic", "didn't it rain" and "magnolia electric co." no official word on whether the m.e.c. lp will contain the bonus demos cd in this new pressing, but i'm guessing no.

secretly canadian now has what comes after the blues available for pre-order... both the cd and lp are shipping now, so you can have yours in-hand a month before it hits stores...

what comes after the us tour... european dates (1/31/05)

"what comes after the blues" coming on april 5th (1/18/05)
the title pretty much says it all- the new magnolia electric co. studio album will be called "what comes after the blues" and be released on april 5th, 2005 on both cd and lp by secretly canadian. many of the tracks have been played on tour over the past two years but only two appear on the just-released "trials and errors" live album (which is almost out of print, btw!)

special jason molina valentine's day solo set (1/18/05)
jason molina will be part of a bill at the knitting factory in nyc this valentine's day celebrating the release of "isn't it romantic" (the poetry book that included a compilation featuring a magnolia electric co. track). also on the bill music-wise are mighty flashlight, mark mulcahy, megan reilly and lo fine. there will also be readings from a number of poets featured in the book.

more magnolia live dates (1/02/05)
the touring schedule for the first four months of 2005 is firming up- european dates are still to come. there will be two record release shows, the first for the "trials and errors" live album on january 15th in bloomington and the second for the new studio album on april 9th in chicago. see the tour dates page for more details...

as promised a couple weeks ago, secretly canadian is now selling both the cd and 2xlp version of the new live magnolia electric co. album "trials and errors", recorded a year and a half ago in belgium.

the trials and tribulations of "trials and errors" (10/28/04)
"trials and errors", the live magnolia electric co. release will be widely available on both cd and 2xlp this winter through secretly canadian. i don't believe the cd will be included with the lp as rumored. don't pay lots of money for this on ebay- it will be readily available if you just wait a month or two...

"isn't it romantic" book now available (10/14/04)
following up on news from last spring, "isn't it romantic: 100 love poems by young american poets" is now available from verse press. this poetry anthology include a compilation with the new magnolia electric co. song "down the wrong road both ways". other musicians appearing on the cd include richard buckner, vic chesnutt, nanang tatang (ida), david berman (silver jews), and many more. the first of the tour dates for the december chilly states tour are now available on the tour dates page... i'll be updating as i get more details and/or dates.

magnolia electric co. trials and errors update (10/09/04)
so word is that "trials and errors" met up with the band in philly last night in cd form. i'm not quite sure what happened, as all previous reports mentioned it being a 2xlp (with the possibility of a cd inside, pyramid electric style)... in any case, it should be available at the rest of the shows this month.

magnolia electric co. release date update (09/21/04)
the limited edition live 2xlp now has a name and formal release date (when it will appear in finer shops around the world)- it'll be called "trials and errors" and make it's way out on january 18th, 2005. it should be available at some point on the tour, though probably not the beginning of the tour. the new studio album (which is still without a definitive title) is scheduled to hit the shelves in early april.

magnolia electric co. planning three new tours (09/21/04)
there's a tour of the northern u.s. in the works for the holiday shopping season (post-thanksgiving through mid-december) as the magnolia train pulls into chilly cities that start with a "d" or "m" like des moines, duluth, minneapolis, milwaukee, moorhead, and madison... then in april there will be a more extensive u.s. tour to coincide with the release of the new album... nothing is finalized (so some of those cities listed might not happen) if you have suggestions or want to set up a show, contact the kork agency usa. june will find the band in europe trying to hit all the stops- scotland, ireland, england, belgium, holland, germany, russia, spain, italy... prague, zagreb and a short scandanavian jaunt are also possibilities... again, there are no definites and if you want to help make something happen contact the kork agency europe a.s.a.p.

magnolia electric co. to play bloomingtonfest slight update (08/25/04)
word on the street is that while magnolia electric co. will still be playing bloomingtonfest this weekend they will NOT be covering warren zevon's "excitable boy" in its entirety as previously reported. they've been playing plenty of other great covers this summer though, so there may be another surprise or two in store yet...

magnolia electric co. to play bloomingtonfest (08/16/04)
magnolia electric co. has been tapped to play this year's bloomingtonfest on august 28th. to celebrate the occasion, they'll be playing warren zevon's "excitable boy" album from start to finish. some of you might have heard them cover "werewolves of london" on the tour last fall... well i can pretty much guarantee you're going to hear it again at this show! lots of other great bands are playing including- br. danielson, early day miners, windsor for the derby, the coke dares, the dirty projectors, elephant micah, fruit bats, the impossible shapes, joan of arc, the microphones/mt. eerie... you get the idea...

new studio album and double live album (08/10/04)
final details are being worked out for the spring 2005 release of the new album, recorded last fall with steve albini. there's also a new live 2xlp recorded last year in europe, slated to be available on the october dates and then through stores and mailorder in january 2005.

three songs: ohia lps to be reissued (08/10/04)
for those that missed out the first time, secretly canadian will be reissuing "the black album", "axxess and ace" and "the lioness" on vinyl in october. "the lioness" and "axxess and ace" are available from the band on tour right now. "the black album" won't be available until october as it will be packaged in a special triple-gatefold jacket featuring the cover and the insert images from the first two pressings. it will also contain the lp-only track "for you" (which was included on the previous pressings of the lp)

summer and fall magnolia electric co. tourdates (08/10/04)
the magnolia electric co. is about to hit the road for the first dates of two separate tours... the august tour features a five man magnolia- jason molina (guitar, vocals), jason groth (guitar), pete schreiner (bass), mark rice (drums) and michael kapinus (keyboard/trumpet)... the line-up will be expanded for the october dates to include jennie benford (guitar, vocals) and mike brenner (lap steel).

secretly canadian has repressed a very small quantity of the limited edition version of magnolia electric co. with the bonus demos disc. it's currently available from retailers (probably of your indie variety) and at live shows (which are done for the year). but do not fear, secretly canadian should have a few available to sell online after the new year.
